The Ørestad City
The new Ørestad areas on the isle of Amager was appointed to be the former city district in 1993 - and the plan was to build and develop a mini metropolis outside of Copenhagen for 20,000 to 30,000 residences - as well as expected 65,000 people working in this part of town - when the Ørestad finally is established.
The Masterplan
In 1997 a master-plan for the new urban area was presented dividing the area into four districts. Since the turn of the millennium - a vast number of buildings have been built - including more than thousands of common residential flats - apartments plus luxury condos - as well as buildings for educational use - hotels - shopping centers and mall - retail stores - the Ørestad College - the new IT University of Copenhagen and University of Copenhagen's Southern Campus covering the whole of Ørestad area. Many new buildings and architectural highlights are under construction together with the building of the Ørestad Business Center. The total area of Ørestad is 3.2 km² and about 600 metres wide and 5 km long. The four districts are - Ørestad Nord - Amager Fælled Kvarteret - Ørestad City and Ørestad Syd.

Ørestad & Amager is worth a visit
The new Ørestad district on the isle of Amager is worth a visit - and it will take nearly five minutes from the Central Station by the Metro to see this unique and creative city raise from the surface - as a new regional centre of Northern Europe called the Øresund Region.

The Merchant Town Christianshavn & Ørestad
The new merchant town Christianshavn was founded around 1617 - and was named after the King (
King Christian IV) - and situated on the Isles of Amager about 110 metres from the cost of Sealand and divided by the waters of the inner harbour. Construction work to establish Christianshavn started - where an artificial bank of soil and rubble from the city was erected across the inner harbour to the shores of Amager. When the embankment was built up - the land filling work began to develop the Christianshavn district with its new artificial waterways. In 1993 - the new Ørestad areas on the isle of Amager was appointed to be the former city district Ørestad - and has since grown to a bustling city area with satisfied well established residents from Copenhagen and from all over Denmark.
