The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek with its beautiful sub-tropical Winter Garden and extensive collections of sculptures and paintings surrounded by a museum building created in the fine art of classicism and inaugurated in 1897 - is a place of art and culture in Copenhagen that must be experienced.
 
The Glyptotek - 1897
Picture of the Glyptotek building in 1910. Architect Vilhelm Dahlerup created the museum's first wing - which was inaugurated in 1897 and later the museum was extended with a new wing in 1906 to houses the collection of ancient arts.
The first exhibition in 1905
One of the exhibitions rooms in 1905. The collection is built around the personal art collection of Carl Jacobsen (1842-1914), the founder of the Ny Carlsberg Breweries in 1871 and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in 1897.
 
Brewer Carl Jacobsen
The Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen (1842-1914) and owner of Carlsberg brewery was the founder of the Glyptotek - who created one of the largest private collections of Danish and French paintings and sculptures of his time together with a gallery of antiquities from Egypt and the Mediterranean area.

“Glyptotheca”
A “glyptotheca” is a building or room devoted to works of sculpture - and The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek houses more than 10,000 works with the largest collection of ancient art in Northern Europe - which makes it one of the most popular art museums in Denmark and Scandinavia.
 
 
The Water Mother from 1921
The sculptor of the Water Mother from 1921 by Kai Nielsen is placed in the Winter Garden. The original was replaced by a new one in 2003.
Paintings by world famous Masters
A broad collection of paintings by world famous Impressionists and Post Impressionists can be seen at the Glyptotek.
 
 World Famous Master Painters
A broad collection of paintings by famous Impressionists like Monet - Renoir - Degas - Cézanne and leading Post Impressionists van Gogh - Toulouse-Lautrec - Paul Gauguin etc., are well represented too - and on display in the new building.

Donation
The entire art collection was donated to the public in 1899 by Carl Jacobsen and his wife Ottilia as a gift together with the museum building.

 
The Winter Garden
The beautiful sub-tropical Winter Garden, where tropical palms and climber flourish under a huge dome of cast iron and glass gives the visitors a refreshing and overwhelming experience.

Brewer Carl Jacobsen
The founder of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek brewer Carl Jacobsen - painted in 1893 by August Jerndorff. The painting is displayed at the Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle.
 

Guided tours
The Glyptotek offers a number of public guided tours all year round. These are free to the museum’s customers.

The Glyptotek is located beside Tivoli - Town Hall - Central Station and near the pedestrian street "Strøget".
